SSRI

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor — a common antidepressant class.

Definition

SSRIs block serotonin reabsorption in the brain, raising its effective levels. They're first-line for moderate-to-severe depression and most anxiety disorders. Common examples: sertraline, escitalopram, fluoxetine.

Clinical context

Full effect takes 4-6 weeks. Side effects (nausea, insomnia, sexual) often improve after the first few weeks.
